The Perperikon Art Festival

But the Festival featured not only drama. The programme of parallel events included an interesting exhibition of local artists; the presentation of two recently published books: Teodora Dimova's novel Eminé and Nikolai Ovcharov's and Daniela Kodzhamanova's Iztochnite Rodopi - drevnata i nepoznata planina [The Eastern Rhodope, Ancient and Unknown]; and a seminar on the Theatre of the 21st Century.

A total of 3,000 visitors attended the various Festival events, which, for a first edition, was an appreciable success.

The festive atmosphere reached its true climax during the Happening at the foot Mount Perperikon. After a tour of the ancient ruins, the crowds of visitors indulged in unbridled revelry to the irresistible pagan beat of Andrei Batashov's drums. Finally, captivated by Ivelina Belcheva's heavenly voice, complete strangers took one another by the hand and danced.
