The Perperikon Art Festival

The Macedonian theatre company, Drama, showed a play based on three tragedies by Seneca and staged by Bulgarian producer Alexander Iliev. It tells the story of family feud and murder and the profound sense of guilt torturing the survivors in a stark allusion to the horrors of ethnic conflict in former Yugoslavia.

The Kurdzhali Dimitur Dimov Theatre also had something exciting for the audience: Shakespeare's The Merry Wives of Windsor produced by Stoiko Genov, who skilfully recreated on stage the spirit of carnival in a mediaeval town square. Incidentally, the atmosphere of this show became the Festival's hallmark.

Young audiences were attracted by Malkite feн [The Small Fairies], a beautiful show presented by the Stara Zagora Puppet Theatre Company.
